It's what gets you to go to the gym, start dating again, and wanting to take that new class.
Your WHY is why you bother to do anything in life.
If, for example, you think my why is because I have bills to pay.
Notice how that sentence feels.
It doesn't feel great, does it? How can you reframe it?
Instead, it could be:
I have bills to pay, and I love my job.
I have bills to pay, and I like the people I work with.
I have bills to pay, and I am working on becoming be debt-free.
The reason we do anything is because of how we think it will make us feel when we get it. Good AND bad.
You may ask why I would choose to do something that makes me feel bad?
The reason is not as simple, but it's reaffirming a belief about ourselves.
Here's an example.
You want to buy a dress you've been eyeing for some time.
You know your credit card bills are getting high, and you've been working on paying them down, BUT you just saw that a Friends and Family discount is happening at Bloomingdales. So you justify it in your mind and go ahead with the purchase.
Dopamine hit!!
You just went against yourself for a FEELING. A feeling that will quickly fade and may even turn into regret.
Your following credit card statement comes in, and you think, I'm never going to be able to get out of this hole.
You think that thought is true, but it isn't. You're making it appear to be with the actions you're taking because of your thoughts.
So how can you make the reward of paying down your debt the dopamine hit?
Guess.
It's your thoughts!
A dress doesn't make you happy. Neither does the cookie or the coffee from your favorite coffee shop.
You make yourself happy with your thinking, always.
You get to choose your thoughts, but you need to challenge those that aren't serving you first.
You can't see your blindside.
It's why we come up short with our repeated annoying habits.
We believe that they are the truth and need to resign ourselves to them. That is simply not true.
It’s a story you are choosing to believe.
That's where a life coach can come in.
I help you discover what those blind spots are so that you can move forward and move on to what you truly desire.
