Subtle Ways to Tune in to Your Body and Soothe Yourself
Let's face it, we're all stressed these days, and often it's because we spend most of our time in our heads and not paying attention to our bodies.
Don't worry; this isn't going to be a post about working out, although studies have shown that it does help to reduce stress.
Your body knows what it needs if you know how to listen to it.
Stress and emotions can get stuck in your physical body, and I want to offer some simple ways to move that stuck energy through you so that it doesn't become trapped or become, God forbid, a dis-ease.
Move.
Whether going for a walk, running, gardening or doing some yoga, there is proof that moving your body changes your emotional state.
Breathe.
Often when we're feeling stressed or anxious, we are breathing shallowly. Focus on deep belly breathing and try making your exhales a little longer than your inhales.
Listen to music.
Music can reduce stress and anxiety by up to 65%. Listen to songs that remind you of a happy and carefree time in your life.
Give yourself some space.
Allowing things to be the way they are without judging yourself gives you room to breathe. No, you're not perfect, and neither is anyone else.
Buffer intentionally.
Whether it's bingeing on a favorite series on Netflix, eating those cookies, or scrolling on Instagram, allow yourself to chill out without judgment. Do what you need to feel better.
